Applying for a student visa? Apply at least three months before you plan to travel

Immigration New Zealand is reminding prospective international students to apply for their Student visa as early as possible, with at least three months ahead of an intended travel date recommended.

Why timing matters this year

New Zealand has received around 20 percent more Student visa applications in 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. There has also been a higher proportion of applications from markets that require more complex assessment and verification, which can mean longer processing times.

If you are still waiting on results

If you are still waiting on academic results or other study documentation, you may be able to apply using a conditional Offer of Place while your education provider finalises your enrolment. This allows your application to begin being assessed, though an unconditional Offer of Place is required before a visa can actually be granted.

Checking wait times

Student visa wait times are published on the Immigration New Zealand website and updated weekly, based on applications processed in the previous four weeks. Immigration New Zealand does not provide guaranteed processing timeframes, as wait times depend on the information provided, the checks required, and the complexity of the application.

If you submitted your application in May or June for the July intake, particularly from a market where applications generally require more extensive verification, it is worth discussing contingency arrangements with your education provider, which may include considering a later intake.
