47 new occupations recognised under AEWV skill levels, with three roles reclassified

How recent occupation updates may affect work visa eligibility.

From 9 March 2026, Immigration New Zealand will update the National Occupation List, adding 47 new occupations at Skill Levels 1 to 3 for the purposes of the Accredited Employer Work Visa framework.

At the same time, three roles — Pet Groomer, Kennel Hand and Nanny — will move from Skill Level 3 down to Skill Level 4.

These changes may affect eligibility, wage settings and pathway planning for both employers and visa applicants.

47 new occupations added at Skill Levels 1 to 3

The addition of 47 occupations aligns immigration instructions with updates to the National Occupation List.

For employers, this may expand access to the Accredited Employer Work Visa pathway for certain roles.

For migrants, it may open new eligibility options where a role was previously not recognised at a qualifying skill level and the opportunity to work longer in New Zealand.

Each occupation will still need to meet the relevant wage thresholds and immigration requirements in place from 9 March 2026.

Three roles reclassified to Skill Level 4

Pet Groomer, Kennel Hand and Nanny roles will move from Skill Level 3 down to Skill Level 4.

This reclassification may influence eligibility settings, including residence pathways and maximum stay provisions where skill level is relevant.

Existing visa holders are not automatically impacted, but new applications lodged from 9 March will be assessed under the updated classification.

Median wage adjustments also taking effect

These occupation changes sit alongside the annual median wage adjustment, which will also take effect from 9 March 2026.

Where wage thresholds and skill classifications intersect, even small shifts can influence eligibility outcomes.

What this means for employers and applicants

For employers, this is an opportunity to review current and planned Job Checks, particularly where roles sit near eligibility thresholds.

For migrants considering an Accredited Employer Work Visa or longer term residence planning, understanding how your occupation is classified from March will be important.

Immigration settings evolve incrementally, but their combined impact can be significant.
