AEWV maximum continuous stays

Some Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) holders are now reaching the maximum time they are allowed to remain in New Zealand under this visa category. It is important for both workers and employers to understand how the maximum continuous stay rules apply and what options may be available once the limit is reached.
The maximum continuous stay rule is the total amount of time a person can spend in New Zealand on one or more AEWVs. When the AEWV was introduced in 2022 the maximum stay was set at three years for skill level four and five roles. Workers in skill level one to three roles were able to apply for a further two years giving them a total of five years in New Zealand.
Since July 2025 some AEWV holders whose visas were granted in the early years of the scheme have begun reaching their maximum stay. Once a person reaches this limit they must spend twelve months outside New Zealand before they are eligible to apply for another AEWV. Employers cannot continue employing workers on an AEWV once they have reached their maximum stay.
The maximum stay rule reflects the temporary nature of the AEWV and ensures that employers continue to check the local labour market at regular intervals. It also helps maintain a clear distinction between temporary work visas and pathways to residence.
If you are approaching your maximum stay you may need to consider alternative visa options. These may include skilled residence pathways, partnership visas or other temporary visa categories depending on your circumstances. Planning early is important so you have enough time to explore your options and avoid unexpected disruption to your plans.
