Student visa peak processing underway for 2026 intake

Immigration New Zealand has confirmed it is currently in a peak processing period for student visa applications, with high volumes lodged for study in 2026.
During peak periods, applications may take longer to process. Students planning to travel to New Zealand are encouraged to apply at least three months before their intended departure date.
Submit complete applications
Applications should be lodged with all required documentation at the outset. Immigration New Zealand may decide an application based solely on the information provided and may not request further evidence.
Applicants should include:
- A valid Offer of Place from a New Zealand education provider
- Evidence of sufficient funds from a genuine source that will be available in New Zealand to support living costs
- Required health and character documentation
- Clear information about study intentions and post study plans
Submitting placeholder documents or statements indicating that further information will be provided later may result in a decline.
Conditional Offers of Place
Applicants outside New Zealand may apply using a conditional Offer of Place while waiting for final academic results. Immigration New Zealand can begin assessing the application and may approve it in principle, provided other requirements are met. An unconditional Offer of Place will be required before a visa can be granted.
Late applications
Students who apply close to their programme start date should discuss contingency options with their education provider. If a visa is not decided before the course begins, the provider may issue a new Offer of Place for a later intake or confirm revised study start dates, which can be uploaded to the online application.
Planning ahead
Applying early and ensuring documentation is complete remain the most effective ways to reduce delays during peak periods.
