The AEWV system is moving faster, but it is less forgiving. Speed is now the reward for precision

What faster processing really means for employers, and why accuracy now plays a bigger role in whether applications succeed or stall.

Recent data from Immigration New Zealand shows that Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) processing times have stabilised at relatively fast levels across employer accreditation, job checks, and visa applications. On the surface, this is good news for employers planning their workforce for 2026.

What sits beneath those numbers is a more important shift. As processing becomes more efficient, Immigration New Zealand is placing greater weight on accuracy, consistency, and compliance at every stage of the process.

Processing times are no longer the pressure point

Average processing times currently sit at:

• around two days for employer accreditation
• around three days for job checks
• around fifteen days for AEWV applications

These timeframes mean delays are now far less likely to be caused by system backlogs. When applications slow down or are declined, the cause is more often found in the detail of the application itself.

Approval rates remain high, but declines are deliberate

Overall approval rates across the AEWV system remain strong. Where applications are declined, the data shows clear and consistent patterns rather than a general tightening of policy.

The most common issues relate to:

• inconsistencies between job advertisements, job checks, and employment agreements
• role requirements that do not align with the claimed ANZSCO skill level
• incomplete labour market testing where required
• missing or incorrect documentation at the time of application

In practice, this means applications that are well prepared continue to move through the system quickly, while those with gaps or contradictions are more likely to be stopped.

Post-decision checks are now part of the landscape

Another trend emerging from the data is the increasing use of post-decision checks. These are no longer unusual. They are becoming a standard part of how Immigration New Zealand monitors employer compliance after approvals are granted.

For employers, this reinforces the need to treat each step of the AEWV process as something that may be reviewed later, not just assessed once.

What this signals for employers

Taken together, the data points to a system that is functioning efficiently but with less tolerance for error. Faster processing has not reduced scrutiny. It has shifted it.

Employers who are clear about role design, consistent in their documentation, and disciplined in their processes are benefiting from shorter timeframes. Employers who rely on assumptions or shortcuts are more exposed than they may have been in the past.
