Updated guidance for AEWV holders changing jobs or finishing work

Immigration New Zealand has published updated guidance for Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) holders who change roles or stop working.
The clarification outlines when a Job Change application is required, what must be included in an application, and the obligations that apply when employment ends.
When a Job Change application is required
In most cases, AEWV holders must apply for a Job Change if they:
- Change employer
- Change work location
- Move into a role with different responsibilities and core functions
A Job Change application must include a valid job token number provided by the employer, together with a job offer or employment agreement that clearly sets out:
- The employer and migrant’s name
- Job title
- Work location
- Pay and hours
- Length of employment
- Roles and responsibilities
Immigration New Zealand has reduced certain information requirements to streamline the process. However, all required details must still be included to allow efficient processing.
Employers must provide the migrant with the job token number, also referred to as the job check number. The unique link generated in Immigration Online should not be forwarded to the migrant. If sent incorrectly, it will be withdrawn and reissued.
Situations where a Job Change may not be required
A Job Change may not be necessary where an AEWV holder moves into a role with the same core function and tasks and there is no change of employer or work location. For example, a promotion from adviser to senior adviser may not require a new application.
Where employment changes occur due to a business sale or restructure, a streamlined Job Change process may apply. If a restructure only results in changes to reporting lines, a Job Change application is not required.
Each situation should be assessed carefully to ensure the correct process is followed.
When employment ends
Accredited employers must notify Immigration New Zealand within 10 days if a migrant stops working for them and has one month or more remaining on their visa. This includes situations where a fixed term agreement concludes.
It is important to note that the approval of a Job Change does not alter the original visa expiry date.
Ensuring compliance
Job Changes are a common point of confusion for AEWV holders. Ensuring that applications are lodged correctly and that obligations are met when employment changes or ends is essential to maintaining lawful status.
